Coherent Inc., one of the world’s leading providers of lasers and laser-based technology, is now ready to polish all of the TMT primary mirrors segments to be manufactured in the United States.
Two full-size TMT Primary Segment demonstration assemblies fitted with aluminum mirror segments have been successfully installed into the Multi-Segment Integration & Test (MSIT) facility at the TMT lab.
The leaf springs required for TMT warping harness mechanism, supporting each one of the 492 primary active segments, are being tested and validated in an Environmental Simulation Laboratory.
Work is underway at TMT Project Lab. near Pasadena.
Dr. Saku Tsuneta, Director General of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), recently met with TMT experts at the technical laboratory in Monrovia, California. Dr. Tsuneta also serves as a member of the TMT Board of Governors, which is accountable for both financial decision-making and strategic planning for the TMT International Observatory.
New developments within the TMT Quality Assurance program include the acquisition of an advanced metrology system to measure to very high precision the telescope primary mirror assemblies.

Pasadena, CA (June 06, 2019) – A Segment Support Assembly (SSA) “pre-build” meeting at the Coimbatore facility of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was successfully completed on May 22, 2019. The meeting was aimed at assessing the readiness of the L&T team to start manufacturing their first SSAs. Participants included India TMT Coordination Centre (ITCC) and the TMT Project Office team.
CILAS will develop the two large deformable mirrors for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT).
The India TMT Optical Fabrication Facility (ITOFF), being constructed at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics campus in Hosakote, near Bengaluru, is rapidly approaching completion. The world-class optical facility was built by India-TMT as part of its contribution to the TMT partnership.
