The TIO Monrovia Lab has recently received significant shipments of 140 warping harness cables and eight segment actuators from India TMT Coordination Center (ITCC).
A Japanese delegation recently visited the India TMT Optics Fabrication Facility (ITOFF) in Bengaluru, India, where they were introduced to the newly installed polishing equipment at the Indian site.
In a significant development for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) International Observatory (TIO), Glen Cole, former lead optical fabrication engineer at TIO, recently visited the India-TMT Optics Fabrication Facility (ITOFF) in Bengaluru, India.
Exciting news out of India: TMT’s Primary Mirror Segment Polishing and Metrology Equipment have been successfully installed in the India-TMT Optics Fabrication Facility. The Stress Mirror Polishing machines and metrology tools involved in the production of TMT’s aspherical polished mirrors (aka roundels) were shipped to India to be installed and tested over several months.
TMT’s Optics and M1 Segment Support Assemblies (SSA) is ready to enter production following a successful Fabrication Readiness Review that assessed the production of the hardware required to support the primary mirror segments. Larsen and Toubro (L&T), which is supplying the SSAs, is now one step closer to start production and shall proceed with the procurement of raw material.
The second TMT India roundel has been completed! The roundel was polished at the Coherent facilities in Richmond, California by the India TMT Coordination Centre (ITCC) staff, using ITCC equipment under the supervision of Coherent’s staff.
India-TMT and industry partners Larsen and Toubro (L&T) successfully manufactured and assembled the first TMT Segment Support Assembly (SSA) in L&T Coimbatore facility. Hard work paid off and India-TMT successfully passed an Assembly Readiness Review a few weeks ago, presenting their first and recently assembled TMT SSA, including all separate compliant components, which are about 450 precision parts.
TMT’s Wide-Field Optical Spectrometer (WFOS), one of its three first-light instruments, successfully completed its Conceptual Design Review in February 2022. This review completed the conceptual design phase and ushered WFOS into its Preliminary Design Phase.
The coating chamber that will provide the required highly reflective thin and uniform coating to both TMT’s Secondary and Tertiary Mirrors (M2 and M3, respectively) recently passed its conceptual design review. The conceptual design and scope of the Secondary and Tertiary Mirrors Coating Facility (M2M3 COAT) was executed and developed by India TMT Coordination Centre (ITCC), via contract with Hind High Vacuum (HHV) headquartered in Bengaluru,...
TMT recently achieved a major project milestone, with a review Board, mainly composed of external reviewers, concluding that its plans for Observatory Operations, Commissioning and Data-Management (OCDM) have reached sufficient maturity at this stage of the project design. Concretely, this positive preliminary review means that TMT’s operations plans are ready for the next rounds of Project reviews, which will assess not only operations but...
