[From Empire Industries ; VANCOUVER] - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Industry for Canada, announced on June 30 that Dynamic Structures, a division of Empire Industries Ltd., will receive up to $70 million to build the precision-steel enclosure of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), the world’s largest earth-based telescope.
“This is a difficult day for Hawaii and TMT. As we attempted to begin our work today, we were met by protests that regrettably resulted in some arrests. Boulders blocked our access to the construction site and the Department of Land and Natural Resources deemed it unsafe for us to proceed," - says Henry Yang, chair of the TMT International Observatory board.
“After more than two months of consultation, education, and dialogue with many stakeholders, we humbly announce that the TMT International Observatory Board has decided to move ahead to restart the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on the morning of Wednesday, June 24." - says Henry Yang, chair of the TMT International Observatory board.
