Last weekend the gears were humming at Kealakehe High School, as the Hawaii Island VEX Robotics Tournament and Robotics Exploration & Showcase, sponsored by Thirty Meter Telescope, brought together thirty teams from Hawaii Island and teams from Maui and Oahu for a day of challenges and teamwork.
The VEX Robotics Tournament, with participants in grades 6-12, featured qualifying matches, alliance selection and playoffs. In addition to the Tournament Champion, Programming Skills and Robot Skills, the VEX Tournament featured Think, Educate, Energy, Amaze, Build, Create, Judges, Design and Sportsmanship Award categories.
"Robotics competitions enhance student achievement by celebrating and promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Each program offers students platforms in computer programming, building, and technical writing while developing innovative and lasting problem solving and critical analysis skills," said Sandra Dawson, Manager for TMT Hawaii Community Relations.
