On December 17, the TMT Pasadena office hosted a workshop on “Broadening Participation in Future Telescopes”.
TMT requested and funded this workshop, developed and organized by UCSC’s Institute for Scientist and Engineer Educators (ISEE), to generate actionable plans for creating more diverse and inclusive telescope workforce communities. The main topics considered were goals, strategies, and outcomes achievable by efforts at the undergraduate through early career levels, professional development of those currently in the workforce, and practices and infrastructure supporting a broader access for science users. The discussion and ideas shared at this workshop will be very helpful to further broaden the participation in the TMT project, and produce recommendations for current and future telescopes to shape their own workforce and diversity plans.
Workshop participants, in-person and remotely, included TMT staff and consultants, and representatives from GMT, NSF Program Officers, UC Santa Cruz, UC Observatories, UCLA, UC Berkeley, University of Arizona, University of Hawaii at Hilo, NOAO, AURA, DKIST, Space Telescope Science Institute, and CUNY.
